Frequently asked questions about AmigaNOS.
******************************************
Michael Richardson
mcr@sandelman.ocunix.on.ca
I think I see at least a question about AmigaNOS every week. I'm
going to try and compile a frequently asked questions on it. I think
at least the following questions must be answered:
1.*) general questions
1.1) what is AmigaNOS
1.2) what is it used for?
1.3) how do I get it to dial?
1.4) where can I get documentation/source/binary?
1.5) can I do dialup X? NFS? SMTP?
1.6) What about PPP?
1.7) where I find out more?
1.8) How do I install it?
2.*) questions of a more technical nature
2.1) Does it come with a library gives you socket calls?
If you mail me other questions (or answers) I'll include them, and
find answers for them. If you have better responses, please send them.
I'm taking this stuff from postings that are still around my system.
This is formatted as a digest, you can go to the next section with
many news readers with ^G.

NOS was originally written for PCs by Phil Karn, a radio ham whose callsign
is KA9Q (the software is often referred to as the KA9Q software). It was
designed to allow hams to run AX25 (a modified version of X.25 for amateur
radio) and TCP/IP over their packet radio modems. It now also supports
TCP/IP over ethernet lines and serial lines, and as far as I know also
has support for other protocols like Net/ROM (ham radio) and PPP.
AmigaNOS is an Amiga port of it, currently maintained by John Heaton, a UK
radio amateur. Its not exclusively for hams, it works very well as a
general network package for PCs, Amigas, Macs etc. I've used it to
connect PCs to Suns, and intend to do the same with an Amiga/Sun connection.
Steve
--------
Subject: 1.2 - What is AmigaNOS used for?
A great deal of people use AmigaNOS over serial lines (with or
without modems) for file transfers and telnet connections. The other
facilities are of limited use unless you are a ham radio operator.
I (<mcr@sandelman.ocunix.on.ca>) use it to connect my Amiga and Sun 3/60.
I have an ftp login that connects me to the MSH: device. This lets me
stick 720k MSDOS disks in my Amiga and transfer things (usually things
I've ftp'ed at school) directly to the Sun.
In order to make use of AmigaNOS' SLIP capabilities you need a host
to connect to that is willing to do SLIP. Just having AmigaNOS doesn't
get you on the Internet.
--------
Subject: 1.3 - How do you get AmigaNOS to dial?

There is now a modded version of AmigaNOS which will dial, and log on for you.
Very useful for slip connections over a modem link.
Available from gate.demon.co.uk (158.152.1.65) for anonymous ftp, with

If you have a Hayse compatible modem, it can be programmed
to (or not to) drop the line when DTR is dropped. Since all
terminal programs release the serial device when they are existed,
the DTR is droped. What you can doe is issure the command to
your modem, if supported, to not drop the line when DTR is dropped.
I hope this helps,

From: dkf8117@tamsun.tamu.edu (Duane)
The reason that your carrier is dropped when you leave a terminal program,
is that your modem is not set so that "DTR ALWAYS ON", refer to the
manuals, but I imagine its a dipswitch setting...

I have NOT put these into AmigaNOS, because I have no need for them on
Packet Radio.
--------
Subject: 1.4 - Where can I get documentation/source/binary?
If you can ftp, look on ucsd.edu under /hamradio/packet. Look for
the PC documentation, as there is little that is fundamentally
changed.
/hamradio/packet/tcpip/amiga will usually have the latest binaries
and source.
John Heaton also has source and binary kit available for anon-ftp
available from jh.mcc.ac.uk (130.88.202.27). Unless you are on John's
side of the big sink, you would be better advised to try ucsd.edu.

As said above, yes, AmigaNOS will let you do SLIP. How usefull this
is uncertain. It does let you have multiple sessions, and you can do
background file transfers.
No. GfxBase will not run with AmigaNOS.
There is no NFS server or client in AmigaNOS. See question 2.1.

Subject: 2.1 - Does it come with a library gives you socket calls?
You can't interface GfxBase's X server because AmigaNOS does not
provide any kind of standard TCP/IP library interface. Commodore
hasn't really released one yet. Although they do have TCP/IP software
for their network board, I don't think it does socket.library yet, and
AmigaNOS doesn't talk to socket.library anyway.
AmigaNOS is one binary and multitasks internally (but not with
AmigaDOS' help). You have to remember that NOS stands for Network
Operating System. On NOS' native PC environment when you remove NOS
all you have is a sophisticated program loader, NOS provides
everything else.
To add a new client or server to NOS, one must recompile the whole
program. On PCs, the NOS people are currently hitting the 640k crunch
very hard. Fortunately, we don't have this problem.

NOTE: some of these files/archives are very large. Often they contain
source or other files you may not need. If you are sending the files to
yourself over the phone lines, or other slow medium for which you may have
to pay, use the appropriate archiver on your UNIX system beforehand to
delete all unneeded files in the archive. The most common archiving format
is .lzh and .lha, use the lha program for these. See Appendix A for UNIX
versions of archiving programs (lha, zoo, unzip). See note in Appendix B
about Amiga archiving programs.
There is a nice review of science software in the March 1992 (#48) _.info_,
a magazine whose demise is much lamented.
1. MAPLE V =================================================================
MAPLE V, a commercial "Mathematica"-like program is available for the

Site licenses are required in order to run Maple on a network.
For academic institutions, a site license is calculated for each
type of machine, and the price for site licenses depends on the
number and type of machines running Maple.
Site licenses are calculated, as follows:
Number Price of
of Users Multi-User License
1 single-user license
2 - 4 2 x single-user license
5 - 9 3 x single-user license
10 - 16 4 x single-user license

37 - 49 7 x single-user license
50 - 64 8 x single-user license
65 - 81 9 x single-user license
82 - 100 10 x single-user license
101- 121 11 x single-user license
Unlimited 12 x single-user license
This special site license option is available for degree-granting
educational institutions only. For these multi-user licenses, you
will also need to sign a Software License Agreement, which we will
mail/FAX to you as soon as you arrange an order with us.
Although the above site license calculation does not apply to
non-academic sites, volume discounts and special multi-user licenses
are also available.

4a. fifo.library & Csh 5.19 ================================================
Along with GNU emacs you'll probably want the fifo.library from Fish 588.
ux1: /amiga/fish/f5/ff588/FifoLib.lzh 40222 bytes
Also you may want to replace the UNIX sh with csh 5.19 from Fish 624. I needed
to do this to use a TeX-shell in GNUemacs TeX-mode. (NOTE: Using ARexx is
better than using the TeX-shell anyway.)

5a. man ======================================================================
a UNIX-like "man" called MRMan is available on Fish #281
ux1: /amiga/fish/f2/ff281/MRMan.lzh 46332 bytes
This has zcat included with it. It supports a MANPATH, your choice of "more"
like utility. You can use it to access all of the man pages for the UNIX
textutils and fileutils. The ones to put in the MANPATH are the pre-formatted
/cat directories (usually).
You may want to modify the code so that it will recognize *.1 as a valid man
file. You can use NewZAP, from Fish #574
ux1: /amiga/fish/f5/ff574/NewZAP.lzh 29756 bytes
5b. diff ====================================================================
UNIX diff is available from
ftp.uu.net:/systems/amiga/dillon/diff115.lzh
Also see Appendix A, B.
5c. compress, uncompress, zcat ============================================
compress is available in the compress-4.0 distribution. Note that to get
uncompress and zcat you simply copy compress
copy compress uncompress
copy compress zcat
The program operates according to the name it is invoked with.
5d. tar ====================================================================
UNIX tar is available on Fish #445
ux1: /amiga/fish/f4/ff445/Tar.lzh 104399 bytes
It may give you a total system crash when extracting from an archive unless
you use NewZAP (Fish #574) to apply the patch in Tar/patch01/src/bin.patch1
A patched version is also available on wuarchive,
/systems/amiga/utilities/cli/archive/tar-patched.lzh 124633 bytes
